The mighty Shoalhaven River flows 327kms from the Great Dividing Range, east of Cooma, dropping 865m to the ocean at Shoalhaven Heads. The section from Tallowa Dam to Grady's Riverside Retreat on the Lower Shoalhaven consists of regular grade 1 and 2 rapids and is a great place to get your first experience of a moving water multi-day canoe journey.

What to expect:

  • This is a proper remote guided moving water experience. Expect beginner level rapids of varying difficulty.
  • Day One - our specialist guides will focus on instruction, technique and building a base of skills and river awareness. You will learn the foundational skills to control your canoe, techniques for paddling certain types of rapids, what rapids to avoid and why, an introduction to camping along the river and local knowledge shared with you from our passionate and experienced guides.
  • Day Two and Three - will be journey focused and building on the skills learned on Day One, many opportunities to explore the area and practise your new skills. Professional feedback and assistance from our guides.
  • You will learn moving water paddling skills, how to read a river, what to look out for, information on the local area, camping out in the bush with canoes, how to read maps and much more.
  • You will have a lot of fun!
  • You will find some jump rocks and areas to explore on foot.
  • You will leave this experience with the knowledge and skills to confidently go on a multi-day canoeing expedition of your own.
  • We only take small groups. We have a maximum group size of 10.

  • Professional and passionate specialist white water canoeing instructors 
  • High supervision ratios to maximise your safety and learning 
  • All activity related equipment - including white water canoes, paddles, lifejackets and helmets
  • All necessary group safety equipment (carried by the guide) - canoe rescue kit, first aid kit, satellite communication device
  • National Parks fees paid on your behalf
  • Transport to/from our office in the Kangaroo Valley to the river and return
  • Secure parking for your vehicle while on the tour
  • Hot drinks including tea, coffee, soups, and hot chocolate
  • A delicious dinner and desert will be provided each night. *Breakfast, lunches and snacks are not included.
  • An all meals package (breakfast, lunch, and snacks) is $155/person additional fee

  • This is an instructional course designed to set participants up for success on multi-day canoeing expeditions on moving water. 
  • Valley Outdoors staff are available to provide instruction and impart skills to empower you on your outdoor journey. As such, you will have the opportunity to participate in all parts of the overnight experience. This includes setting up camp, cooking, paddling and group activities
